Prince Bassey The late Mr. & Mrs. Edet Okon Otu of Adiabo in the Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State were the parents of Edet Otu, who was born on October 18, 1959. He was raised in Calabar, his hometown, as well as Jos, Plateau State, where his father had been transferred to a Church of Scotland mission. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Calabar's Faculty of Social Sciences. He worked in finance and the oil industry before transitioning into politics. He dabbles in farming as well.

On the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform, he won the election for Senator for Cross River South in April 2011. Later, in 2016, he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), and in the 2019 election, the party chose him to represent Cross River South in the Senate.
